This painting was inspired by the late 19th century science fiction classic, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea”, by Jules Verne. Bold colors like red and orange were used to encourage the viewer’s eyes to dance around the composition. I’m interested in perception and how the brain processes the information it receives from the eyes.

The Nautilus is the name of the sea vessel used by Captain Nemo, the main character in the novel. Nemo used his ship to explore the waters of the world and to occasionally exact revenge on his enemies. The vessel was a submarine and in the novel, Verne’s, in true science fiction fashion, gives the reader a glimpse of what the military and marine capabilities of the submarine would be in the future.
